Recommendation Systems

Recommendation Systems

Product and content recommendation engines built on user behavior and preferences (collaborative and content-based filtering) to lift cross-sell, session time and loyalty across stores and media.

Overview

Every physical shop knows that half of its sales come from the mouth of a clever shopkeeper: "take a look at this one as well — it goes perfectly with what you have just picked". Yet most online stores, content platforms and enterprise portals have no such shopkeeper; every visitor sees the exact same shelf. A recommendation system is that clever shopkeeper, scaled to millions of users: in the moment, it understands who this person is and what they want, and places the next item — product, article, video or service — in front of them out of thousands of candidates. The outcome shows up in three numbers: a larger basket, a longer session, a higher return rate. At PBDP we treat this service as the natural continuation of predictive analytics, the point where data graduates from understanding to suggesting.

How does a recommendation system work?

Three families of methods cover almost every real market need. First, collaborative filtering: "people who bought like you also bought this" — it needs no understanding of content at all and simply improves as data grows. Second, content-based methods: the attributes of the item or its text are matched against the user's taste; this is vital for brand-new products nobody has bought yet, and its roots lie in natural language processing. Third, hybrid methods with business rules: stock levels, margin, active campaigns and brand policy are injected into the suggestion pipeline. The production model is usually layered: hundreds of candidates, then precise ranking, then commercial filters — all inside a few dozen milliseconds.

Where does it make the most money?

Project experience shows three spots with the clearest payback: the pre-purchase product page in an online store (complementary and substitute suggestions), post-purchase email and notification flows (re-timing the next buy), and homepages plus content end-pages in portals (keeping the user inside the session). One important note: recommenders are not only about selling more. In a support system, the right article placed in front of a stuck customer deflects tickets; in an enterprise portal, the right training is suggested to the right person. Anywhere a list of options meets finite human attention, a recommender earns its place.

What you receive

  • A real-time suggestion engine: a service that returns a personalised list for every live user.
  • Full connection to your store or platform: suggestions stay in sync with stock, pricing and marketing rules.
  • A rule-control panel: your merchandising team registers "never show this next to that" without touching code.
  • Built-in A/B testing: every algorithm change is measured against sales with statistically honest numbers.
  • Recommendation autopsy reports: why this item was suggested — so both your team and your customers keep trusting it.
  • Cold-start models: a starting solution with no history, for brand-new users and newly listed items.

How we work

  1. Define the business goal: bigger baskets? long-tail sales? retention? the goal decides the success metric.
  2. Data assessment: click, purchase and review events plus web analytics logs; coverage and freshness set the quality ceiling.
  3. Baseline model: implemented inside our machine learning development framework and scored with ranking metrics.
  4. Interface integration: suggestion blocks rendered in the web application or storefront, with responsive design.
  5. Continuous optimisation: periodic retraining, new-version experiments and slow, evidence-based retirement of wrong hypotheses.

The starting problem: new users and new items

The hardest question in every first meeting is: "we have no behavioural data — where do we even start?" The answer has three parts: begin with simple rules and best-sellers, register user identity from day one (even before login), and keep content-based methods alive for freshly added items. Most of the world's successful systems took exactly this path; nobody is born with a complete recommendation engine. If you lack event-instrumentation infrastructure, we define its prerequisite inside the same project so the data of coming months becomes the model's fuel.

Frequently asked questions

How much data do we need?

A serious collaborative-filtering build usually needs tens of thousands of meaningful events per month; but a hybrid, content-led version runs on far less. In the initial assessment we measure your data's volume and quality and tell you honestly which family of methods pays off today and which one belongs to six months from now.

Do suggestions not tire customers out and trap them in a bubble?

Only if you sacrifice diversity for similarity alone. Our algorithm carries two tuning knobs: post-ranking diversification and a repeat cap per item within a time window. The customer should feel the shop knows them, not that one choice is stalking them forever.

What does launch cost and take?

A first edition with baseline rules and a simple model typically goes live on the site within four to eight weeks — yes, that small. The full edition with learned ranking and A/B testing is scoped as the next phase. The precise estimate becomes clear in the first session, once we know your catalogue size and platform.
