Overview

Product engineering turns an idea into a manufacturable specification; reverse engineering turns a product you can buy into knowledge you can rebuild. At PBDP these are two faces of one discipline: full technical and commercial ownership of a product, from the first model to the production documentation package. Whether a supplier discontinued your component, an imported product needs localising, or a competitor's part finishes thirty percent cheaper and you want to know why — the route runs through measurement, modelling, analysis and redesign.

What product and reverse engineering actually do

Forward work covers function definition, product architecture, material and process selection, all the way to volume production. Reverse work applies when a product leaves the market, a part must be recreated without drawings, or benchmark analysis is on the table. We respect intellectual-property boundaries: the output is an original design based on function analysis, never a copy. Before spending anything, we price the opportunity through feasibility and market analysis.

What a product engineering project delivers

  • Reconstructed 3D models: from scanning and precision metrology, with tolerances that manufacture rather than merely look right.
  • Function and cost analysis: BOM extraction and a cost breakdown of the current product with its weaknesses mapped.
  • Optimised redesign: gains in performance, weight or price — including geometry friendly to mould making.
  • Simulation: structural, thermal and assembly validation before the first metal is cut.
  • Electronics and firmware: for smart products, circuit analysis via PCB review and software re-implementation through the firmware team.
  • Validation prototypes: working models built with rapid prototyping, plus a written test report.
  • Production package: industrialisation documents delivered through manufacturing preparation.

The process from teardown to production handoff

  1. Objective capture: function, target price, service life and destination market.
  2. Teardown and measurement: documented disassembly, scanning and metrology.
  3. Root-cause analysis: establishing why this shape, material and process were chosen.
  4. Redesign: costed and optimised in dialogue with industrial design to preserve product identity.
  5. Prototype and test: iterate until the specification is confirmed.
  6. Handover: documentation pack, team training and the industrialisation plan.

When reverse engineering genuinely pays

Three scenarios deliver the strongest returns: localising imported parts made expensive or unavailable by sanctions and currency, extending products whose original maker has exited the market, and benchmark teardowns that reveal exactly where a competitor earns margin. If the opening analysis says a redesigned product cannot beat current unit cost, we tell you and stop; real cases appear in our project archive.

Frequently asked questions

Is reverse engineering legal?

Reverse work for learning, remanufacturing service parts or building an improved product is generally permissible; copying protected industrial designs or brand identity is not. We review that boundary before starting and design the output as an independent product.

We only have a workshop sample and no drawings at all.

That is the normal case. We measure, scan and reconstruct the model with engineering tolerances matched to the final manufacturing method, including surface modelling for free-form parts.

Is the output a report or full production drawings?

A complete industrial package: 3D model, dimensioned production drawings, BOM, process descriptions and the prototype test report — after handover the line runs without us.

Send one thing — your product or sample — and contact PBDP for a feasibility answer and a written quote after an initial review.
