Overview

Cameras are everywhere, yet most of them only record — nobody is actually watching. Computer vision development closes that gap: it teaches a system to see, interpret and react to what stands in front of the lens. Defect detection on a production line, customer counting in a store, plate reading at a car park, hard-hat and mask compliance on a shop floor, traffic monitoring across a city — all of it grows from the same craft. At PBDP we start every vision project from field reality: lighting, angle, vibration, dust and line speed, because a model that performs in the office and limps on the factory floor helps nobody. When the scope is unclear, we begin with a short feasibility pass through AI consulting before any commitment is made.

What does a vision system actually see and understand?

The first level is detection and localisation: the model reports what is in the frame and where each thing sits — the healthy part, the cracked edge, the face, the plate. The second level is scene classification: this frame means stop the line, that one means someone entered a danger zone. The third level is tracking and counting through video: how many people passed this door, how long this vehicle idled, how fast this parcel moves along the belt. The fourth level is precise geometric measurement, the backbone of dimensional quality inspection. Which combination applies depends on your scenario, and most projects land between simple detection and a fully decision-making system — which is where bespoke models earn their keep.

Use cases that are economic today, not someday

Visual quality inspection delivers the fastest payback: a defect the human eye missed after two hours of shift, now sitting in a customer's hands, costs both the return and the reputation. The second scenario is workplace safety — monitoring entry to machinery zones or missing protective equipment. The third is counting and behaviour analytics in stores and exhibition halls for better layout and staffing. The fourth is automatic reading of visual identity — plates, handwritten forms — eliminating manual data entry altogether. All four have run as delivered projects of ours, so the decision rests on field experience rather than vendor slides.

What you receive

  • A vision model trained on your own imagery: with the dataset assembled during the project together with your quality and operations staff.
  • A real-time processing system: connected to your existing cameras, running on a local server, on cloud or on an edge device beside the line.
  • Monitoring and reporting panel: live events, defect statistics, visual alerts and exports that feed your management dashboards.
  • Wiring into business logic: stop commands, alarms, ERP entries or supervisor SMS — within your broader AI automation architecture.
  • Hardware specification where needed: camera and processor selection delivered alongside our IoT hardware development services.
  • Documentation and training: an operations manual plus hands-on training for your supervisor running the system day to day.

How the work progresses

  1. Site visit and scenario definition: recording light, distance, angle and speed; agreeing a precise definition of "defect" or "event".
  2. Image data collection: authentic footage and labelling; rare failure cases are strengthened with synthetic data.
  3. Training and evaluation: accuracy measured under hard conditions, not just on a clean laboratory set.
  4. Implementation on the target platform: optimising the model for the destination hardware, often onto embedded programming and edge modules.
  5. Commissioning and integration: visual, mechanical and software assembly through hardware-software integration, then long-term monitoring begins.

Edge or cloud? The decision that sets your annual cost

Every frame shipped to the cloud consumes bandwidth and service fees and depends on the internet surviving; in factories and stores many decisions must be made in a few hundred milliseconds with the network down. Our rule of thumb: heavy, urgent processing lives on the device beside the camera, while report aggregation and model retraining run server-side. In larger deployments we propose the hybrid architecture in the design session with your real bandwidth and latency numbers, and write it into the architecture document — so that in three years, when the camera count has grown tenfold, the system is not the one caught off guard.

Frequently asked questions

Will this work with our current cameras, or must we buy new hardware?

In most scenarios the installed cameras are perfectly usable — resolution and field of view simply need to suit the problem. Where an upgrade genuinely helps, we state it transparently under a "minimum change" principle; and if custom enclosures or mounts are needed, module design and rapid prototyping of the physical parts sit comfortably within our team's capability.

How accurate will the model be on our production line?

We do not quote an honest number before seeing your data; promising "99 percent accuracy" without real samples is advertising, not engineering. Typically, after seventy to a few hundred labelled examples we can estimate the realistic accuracy ceiling, and a two- to three-week pilot on the actual line measures that figure along with the real false-alarm rate.

Who owns the privacy responsibility for the imagery?

Your organisation does, and the technical design exists to make that promise real: minimal retention, face blurring wherever identification is unnecessary, role-based access and full mapping to applicable privacy rules. In public spaces the system is configured to record events, not identities.

To turn silent cameras into attentive observers, contact PBDP and send a short clip of your scenario — we will answer with a free initial feasibility review.
